The earliest residents of East Windsor Township were Native Americans. They lived along the Neshanic River. The river served as a transportation route to the surrounding area. For the next 200 years, Native Americans lived in the township.

East Windsor Township was formed in 1797, after a disagreement between the residents of the new town and the residents of West Windsor Township led to a split. In 1797, the two townships were divided by the state legislature. But the division was not complete, because West Windsor Township had a few more residents. So the residents of West Windsor Township were allowed to remain in their original township until 1800.

The people of West Windsor Township wanted to continue as one township, but they couldn’t agree on which roads and bridges should be built in the township. The residents of East Windsor Township didn’t want to pay for these improvements.

Instead, they lived in East Windsor Township. The first land sales in East Windsor Township took place in the early 1700s.

In 1702, George and Mary Rescarrick bought land in the northwest corner of the township. They paid $10 for 640 acres and $6 for 160 acres, for a total of $7,000. They were the first purchasers when they bought land in the township.

In 1721, John and Mary Hight bought about 3,000 acres.
